Over the past few years, The Great Escape Festival has become known as one of the best events to showcase hot new talent. Taking over 35 venues in sunny Brighton over one weekend in May, around 400 bands take to the numerous stages across the city. You’re just as likely to see an acoustic set in an ice-cream parlour as you are witnessing one of the big names taking to the dome.
Packed full of secret sessions, DJ sets and awesome after-parties, it is absolutely the place to be this May. Full of music fans, the weekend is also the best place to gain some serious fashion inspiration whilst discovering some of the best new acts over the past 12 months. This year, mega babes Kelis and Ella Eyre are headlining along with the likes of Wild Beasts, These New Puritans and Example. Here’s some of our top tips to check out over the weekend:
Signed to Metronomy, Django Django and Justice’s record label Because Music, Denai Moore has supported the likes of John Grant, Volcano Choir and Tom Odell. Gaining recognition from both 6Music and Radio 1, the gorgeous singer-songwriter has crafted the kind of songs that will make your soul melt and your heart sing.
The love-child of Kimya Dawson and Kurt Cobain, Australia’s Courtney Barnett is providing us with an early summer soundtrack that has us pining for long, sunny evenings. Her songs are effortlessly cool and instantly infectious – we’ll definitely be at the front to witness our latest girl crush. Sway away to songs such as ‘History Eraser’ and ‘Avant Gardner’ – you’ll fall in love with her just as much as we have.
South London based vocalist and producer Laura Bettinson has been involved in a wide array of creative projects ever since graduating from Goldsmiths (which has boasted talents such as Blur, Katy B and James Blake). Perfectly blending art, music, film and fashion, FEMME creates addictive pop bangers that we know we’ll be playing over and over again.
